How to Obtain a Federal Tax Credit with Energy-Efficient Windows

Did you know that Energy Star labeled doors qualify for a federal tax credit? If you are a homeowner that’s looking to catch a little break and maybe earn a bit more back on your taxes, then start becoming more energy-efficient in your life. While there are plenty of environmentally-friendly options out there, this article will focus on finding the right type of window that will reward you with tax credit.

How Do You Qualify?

In order for a window to be Energy Star labeled it must have two main labels on the window itself. One of them is the U.S. Department of Energy’s label while the other is the National Fenestration Rating Council label. The U.S. Department of energy is blue and the National Fenestration Rating council label is white. Be sure that you look for both labels when shopping around for windows. While you may believe that a window without these two labels won’t qualify for the credit, be sure that you contact the manufacturer as they are not required to label them. This may be a bit confusing for some homeowners but always verify before you purchase to ensure that you’re getting an energy-efficient product.

Be on the Lookout for…

Don’t be fooled with a false label as some manufacturers will post their own label on them. While they may declare it an energy-efficient product, it may not actually apply to the state’s requirement, therefore voiding any chance of obtaining credit for it. Be sure that you check all of the details in the fine print so that you don’t waste your time and money.
